About

Want to learn more about Atlas?

Atlas is a weekly portrait blog featuring interesting people, but there is more to it than that. Atlas can be approached as an information resource, a conceptual art project, and an experiment involving photography and social media.

At its core, Atlas is a database of interesting creative professionals. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the subjects in the photos, their careers, and their projects. Contact information for each subject allows you to reach out to them, either directly, or through comments on the blog. Visitors are able to share their knowledge by nominating people they know to be featured on the site.

Conceptually, the project revolves around the idea of individualism and reaching to be the best you can be. What makes these subjects interesting is that they are regular people who are doing amazing things. Atlas studies these individuals and tries to figure out which conditions in their lives led to their accomplishments. At the same time Atlas holds these people up as examples that anything is possible, if you want it to be.

Atlas is also an experiment in presenting photographic work using social media. Unlike other methods of display – a gallery wall, a printed page, even a portfolio website – social media allows for a direct dialogue between the viewer, the subject, and the photographer. The “Nominate Someone” feature gives viewers an opportunity to become active contributors and help shape the project.

When combined, all the various aspects come together to create Atlas, a project that gives back to its viewers and subjects, grows and changes based on their contributions, and inspires us to improve ourselves. Thanks for taking the time to learn about Atlas, please let me know what you think in the comments below, and don’t forget to recognize the interesting people in your life by nominating them.
